Marine policing

Every police recruit has to complete a 2 to 3 year probationary period on the front line, which gives you the skills and experience you need to progress your career. But after your probation, there’s a huge range of different positions you could look to specialise in, including a role in Marine Policing.

Role purpose

In Marine Policing, you could progress into a role commanding a police boat. Here, you'd be working to achieve operational objectives whilst ensuring the safety of the boat, its passengers, the crew and the public.

  • You’ll plan marine operations carefully, doing your best to mitigate known and anticipated risks, and employ approved tactics that the vessel and crew are capable of.
  • You’ll oversee all crew members, ensuring everyone understand their assigned duties and is capable of performing them.
  • To protect both the vessel and everyone on board, you’ll ensure your crew are briefed on the stowage and use of personal safety equipment, as well as the procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency situation.
  • It’s your role to check and evaluate weather conditions before leaving the harbour, carefully weighing up the risks and making the right decision on whether it’s safe to deploy the boat.
  • You’ll carry out pre-deployed checks of the vessel, its equipment and crew, ensuring the engines, instruments, controls and systems are all functioning properly and the vessel is appropriately equipped and crewed to be able to carry out the operation successfully.
  • When it comes to speed and manoeuvring, you’ll handle the vessel safely and appropriately to successfully complete the operation while at the same time keeping everyone on board safe.
  • When you're out on the water, you’ll quickly identify emerging risks and take action to resolve them so you can successfully complete your operation, whilst keeping the vessel, its passengers and nearby crafts safe.
  • You’ll maintain logs, risk assessments and file reports to comply with statutory regulations and force policies.
  • This is just one way your policing career could take you after successfully completing your probation. Find out more about career progression.
