Established in 1998, The National Black Police Association (NBPA) aims to promote good race relations and equality of opportunity, both within the UK police service and the wider community.

Support we provide

We work with both prospective and serving police officers to help them progress, and succeed, in their careers. Our support includes:

  • Working with stakeholders to ensure racial equality is at the heart of the police agenda
  • Staff members from various ethnic backgrounds
  • Mentoring schemes

Questions you might have

It’s natural to have questions when taking any new step. The NBPA is here to ensure that your race will always be respected within your role as a police officer. Take a look through our FAQs below.

Will I be able to progress in my career?

Policing gives you great scope for development and promotion. After you’ve finished your two or three year probation, there are many roles you can specialise in – find out more about the career progression opportunities available to you. You can also see if you’re eligible for our mentoring scheme, where experienced offers share their knowledge, insights and experience to help officers progress in their career.

What safety training will I receive?

If you’re worried about safety, you’re not alone. Keeping our officers safe is really important. That’s why you’ll receive extensive personal safety training, giving you the skills you need to quickly assess situations, de-escalate where possible and react in a proportionate and safe manner. Find out more about personal safety training.

What happens if I experience discrimination at work?

The police service is committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of all its officers and doesn’t tolerate any form of discrimination. There are robust processes in place to ensure all officers are protected and if any officer from our community is experiencing discrimination, get in touch with us – we’re here to help.

My friends and family don't think the police is a good career move for me. What can I tell them?

We understand the additional burden wearing a police uniform can have in some communities. Joining the police gives you a chance to serve your community and increase the cultural understanding of our workforce. This will help policing to better understand all communities and work collaboratively to tackle crime.
